I recently boarded The Liberty as a guest travel blogger to experience what the cruise line offers and was pleasantly surprised to get to join solo traveler Mary Brown from Tallahassee, Florida for lunch. When the ship’s Hotel General Manager Stephen LaCivita chose her as my lunch companion, he knew what a perfect hostess, Mary Brown, would be!
Mary, age 86, has taken over 150 cruises in her life, so we immediately bonded as newfound friends. We enjoyed lunch on board, toured her stateroom and met other guests to chat about their experiences. Here’s my honest review of why this river cruise is the perfect way to celebrate America’s big birthday year or any other occasion.
What Makes Small Ship Cruising with American Cruise Lines Special
If you’re used to large ocean liners, small ship cruising feels so different and so perfect in a setting like this. What I witnessed was an elegant, relaxing environment to explore America. I met passengers from Germany, California and Arizona and they all bragged about the exquisite food and friendly staff. And, interestingly, they loved the fact that the team of employees are all Americans.

As I waited for Mary to arrive, I noticed how genuinely happy the service staff were. They were smiling, talking with passengers and enjoying their jobs. On some large cruise ships, the poor wait staff look drained and are not the most joyful waiters and waitresses.
I dined on tomato bisque and a chicken salad croissant as well as a to-die-for strawberry shortcake. Mary shared with me the pastry chef’s creations had been exceptional for the whole journey. After lunch, Mary toured me around the ship and when we entered The SkyLounge, I found a group of travelers playing cards.
This foursome was from Arizona and were happy to share details of their experience. They all agreed the price of the cruise, approximately $5K a couple, was appropriate. Drinks are included in this package and there’s a robust list of excursions to participate in at each port. (Excursions are extra.) I asked them if they had a variety of wines available and they encouraged me to open the cabinet and cooler to see. Yes, indeed, there were at least 15 to 20 different white wines and I saw all types of red wines and hard spirits available.I asked the group why they had chosen the cruise and they all remarked that they enjoy history and learn a lot from the guest lecturers who come on board. I love that this cruise has expert historians that educate you and this differentiates this cruise compared to larger cruise lines.
Features of the Cabin
When I toured Mary’s cabin, I found the size to be adequate. She had a solo room, so she had a double bed in her cabin. She, like all guests, had a balcony, and the bathroom was quite a bit larger than on ocean cruise ships. Instead of all built-ins, she had a chest of drawers that was actually a piece of furniture as well. I asked her if the rooms were quiet, and she said, “Very peaceful since they are gliding down rivers.” In fact, she mentioned activities wind down early, before 10 p.m., so if you are expecting a casino or a late-night comedy show, this isn’t the cruise experience for you. However, you are welcome to stay out in Savannah as long as you would like because the gangway is staffed around the clock to let you back on the ship.

In terms of demographics, this cruise line tends to attract people over 50. During my tour, I would say that the average age of passengers was in their 60s.
