So, you just booked your trip and you’re looking for some creative things to bring on a cruise? Then this post is for you!
Over the last few years, I’ve seen some interesting things that people bring on cruises.
On my last cruise on the Virgin Scarlet Lady, I met a woman who hand-knitted tiny octopuses that she secretly hid around the ship so passengers and crew members could find them. (The octopus is the unofficial Virgin Voyages mascot). This scavenger hunt game, which has become wildly popular on cruises, usually consists of hiding yellow rubber ducks around the cruise ship. They come with a message attached. Some people thrive on this nonsensical game, while others loathe it. I sort of think it’s silly, yet fun.
Beyond the yellow ducks, there are gazillions of products that do make a difference and can enhance your cruise experience. Some make your room more organized. Some bring extra comfort to your vacation. Here are my suggestions for creative things to bring on a cruise that will improve your next experience.

For Organization
1. Towel clips/bands
These might seem trivial, but towel clips or bands are lifesavers when you’re out on deck and the wind picks up. They keep your towel securely attached to your lounge chair, ensuring it doesn’t blow away when you step away for a dip in the pool or a stroll around the deck.
These little gadgets are small, lightweight, and take up almost no space in your luggage, but they make a big difference in comfort.
2. Magnetic hooks
This is a necessity for saving space in a cruise stateroom. With most cruise cabins only having 167 square feet, you have to think creatively about where to store your stuff once you fill all the drawers.
Magnetic hooks are perfect for adding extra hanging space in your cabin’s closet or on other surfaces. Cruise walls are made of metal so why not hang your items on the walls? Voila, problem solved.
3. Over-the-door shoe holder… Not for shoes
Over-the-door shoe holders are genius for cruising, but not necessarily for storing shoes. Instead, use them to organize toiletries, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and other small items that can easily get lost in the shuffle.
These holders keep everything visible and easily accessible, saving you time and preventing frustration. They are a simple way to declutter your space and keep everything in its place.
4. Vacuum-sealed compression bag… No vacuum needed
Packing for a cruise can be a challenge, especially if you plan on bringing a variety of outfits for different occasions. Vacuum-sealed bags allow you to compress bulky clothing items, freeing up space in your suitcase for more essentials (or souvenirs!).
These bags also help keep your clothing organized and wrinkle-free, so you can spend less time ironing and more time enjoying your vacation.
5. Lanyards/ID holder
There’s nothing worse than getting on a cruise with your family and not having a place to put your stateroom keycard, credit card, and cash. These waterproof lanyards keep everything in one safe place and are adjustable in length.
If you are interested in a cruise that doesn’t even have LANYARD in its vocabulary, check out Virgin Voyages. My recent experience on the Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady was pure bliss. It’s like a floating party on the high seas, complete with incredible food, top-notch service, and stunning destinations. I love that they don’t use lanyards…they have sleek, high-tech bracelets to access your cabin.
6. Hat clip
Do you have a nice sun hat that you worry about destroying its shape in your beach bag? There’s a solution. My friend Nancy Newton Thomas shared this idea with me!
This stylish, tropical leaf-designed hat clip allows you to keep your hat with you at all times without having to hold it when you’re loaded down with beach gear. Created in stainless steel, it’s weather-resistant and can also be clipped onto your pocketbook for a fashionable look.
Thanks, Nancy!
7. Packing cubes
I’m convinced packing cubes work. I began using my set in 2023 and they save space and help fit double the amount of clothes in my suitcase by compressing and then zipping them into a smaller pouch.
The packing cubes I recommend from Amazon, BAGSMART, come in a variety of sizes which allows you to organize shirts and dresses in larger cubes and underwear and socks in smaller sizes. Plus, I always leave one empty for dirty workout shirts, shorts, etc.

For Fun
8. Magnetic door decorations
Decorating your cruise cabin door with fun and creative designs has become a popular trend. I often giggle when I see what people do to customize their doors.
Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or want to add a personal touch to your space, you can personalize your door and add a festive touch to your vacation. They are easy to apply and remove and they won’t damage the door’s surface. Plus, they help you spot your cabin from a distance!
9. Cruise nail decals
Why not jazz up your fingernails and get creative for your next cruise? These decals are easy to apply and make your hands cruise-ready and festive!
10. Compact binoculars
Whether you’re whale watching, searching for distant islands, or just enjoying the view from your balcony, a small pair of binoculars can take your cruise experience to the next level.
Binoculars allow you to see details you might otherwise miss and give you a closer look at the beautiful scenery and wildlife that often surround cruise ships. Lightweight and portable, these binoculars are a must-have for any cruise adventure.
11. Travel journal
I love genuine leather travel journeys because they have a true feeling of nostalgia.
This leather beauty is perfect for men and women and it also has sleeves where you can store keepsakes such as cruise tickets and itineraries so you can recall the special details of your cruise.
12. Instant camera with colored film
In the age of smartphones and digital cameras, there’s something special about capturing moments with an instant camera. The tangible, retro-style photos that develop in your hands offer a unique and nostalgic way to document your trip, making it one of the most creative things to bring on a cruise!
Bring along some colored film to add a creative twist to your photos. Whether you’re snapping shots of the stunning sunset, your delicious dinner, or your fellow cruisers, instant photos are a fun and spontaneous way to capture your journey.
For Your Health
13. Motion sickness patches
There’s good news for people worrying about motion sickness. Today’s cruise ships have stabilizers so you often don’t feel the sea like you did 20 years ago. Plus, if you book a room mid-ship, you’ll be less likely to feel any motion.
However, patches are indispensable for those prone to nausea and dizziness. These patches work by delivering medication through the skin, helping to prevent the unpleasant symptoms associated with motion sickness.
By wearing a patch, you can enjoy your cruise without worrying about missing out on activities due to queasiness. Whether you’re dining at a gourmet restaurant, participating in a shore excursion, or simply lounging on deck, motion sickness patches ensure you can do so comfortably and without interruption. Plus, they are waterproof!!
14. Sunscreens that protect
I’ve done extensive research on the BEST products out there for sun protection and these two I will mention here consistently appear on dermatologist’s lists as some of the best.
When you invest in a high-quality, broad-spectrum sunscreen, you can spend extended time under the sun. Sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays are essential for preventing sunburn, which can be painful and ruin your trip.
Whether you’re lounging by the pool, exploring tropical destinations, or enjoying outdoor activities, applying sunscreen regularly keeps your skin healthy and shields you from the sun’s harmful effects.
15. Electrolyte packets
Electrolyte packets are a smart addition to your cruise essentials, particularly when traveling in warm climates. As you enjoy various physical activities like hiking, swimming, or simply walking around the ship, your body loses essential minerals through sweat.
These small, convenient packets help replenish those lost electrolytes, maintaining your hydration and energy levels. Staying properly hydrated is crucial for avoiding symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and muscle cramps, ensuring you feel your best throughout your voyage.
16. Disinfectant wipes and spray
Disinfectant wipes and sprays are critical for maintaining a clean and germ-free environment in your cabin and shared spaces.
On a cruise ship, where many passengers are in close quarters, the risk of exposure to germs and viruses increases. By regularly disinfecting surfaces like door handles, remote controls, and bathroom fixtures, you significantly reduce your chances of getting sick.
Keeping your environment clean helps you stay healthy, allowing you to fully enjoy your cruise.
17. Earplugs
Earplugs may seem like a minor addition to your packing list, but they can greatly enhance your comfort and well-being on a cruise. Ships can be noisy, with sounds from engines, other passengers, and late-night activities potentially disrupting your sleep.
These earplugs are super because they are ultra soft, allowing you to get the restful sleep you need to wake up refreshed and ready to enjoy your next day at sea.
18. Cooling towels
Cooling towels are an excellent accessory for staying comfortable during your cruise, particularly in warm or tropical climates.
These towels are designed to cool you down quickly when activated with water, making them ideal for use during shore excursions, outdoor activities, or even while lounging on the deck.
By helping to regulate your body temperature, cooling towels prevent overheating and keep you feeling refreshed. They are lightweight and easy to carry, ensuring you stay comfortable and healthy even in the hottest environments.
19. Travel-sized yoga mat
A travel-size yoga mat is a must-have for maintaining your fitness routine while at sea. I’m not a germaphobe, but I don’t like using the yoga mats in the cruise ships’ fitness centers.
Whether you practice yoga or pilates, or simply use it for stretching exercises, having your mat allows you to continue your wellness practice even on vacation.
Staying active on a cruise helps to reduce stress, improve flexibility, and maintain your physical health. It’s also a great way to center your mind and body, providing a balance between relaxation and physical activity during your trip.
By bringing a yoga mat, you can create a personal space for exercise and mindfulness, contributing to a healthier and more balanced cruise experience.
For Baby Boomers
20. Prescription pill pouch
Leave your prescription bottles at home! They take up valuable space, which can be better utilized for other essentials or souvenirs. Instead, use these flat, re-sealable clear plastic bags to organize your prescriptions.
These pouches allow you to neatly separate and label your medications by day or dosage time, making it easy to stay on track with your regimen without the bulk of multiple bottles.
Plus, the clear plastic makes it simple to see what you need at a glance, ensuring you always have the right medication. This not only simplifies the packing process but also adds a layer of convenience and peace of mind during your cruise.
21. Night lights
As we age, our eyesight is not as good as it once was, making it more challenging to navigate in low-light conditions.
This three-pack of night lights helps ensure you don’t take a fall during the night, providing gentle illumination to guide your way without disturbing your sleep.
Whether you’re getting up for a glass of water or heading to the bathroom, these small, plug-in lights create a safer environment in your cabin, reducing the risk of accidents. Their dense size makes them easy to pack, and they’re a simple yet effective way to enhance your comfort and safety during your stay.
22. Folding step stool
Whether you take this for your grandchildren to use at the sink or bring it on board so you can easily reach the top shelf of the closet to see your clothes, this lightweight stool will come in handy for grandparents.
Its compact design makes it easy to pack, yet it’s sturdy enough to provide the extra height needed for various tasks. From helping little ones wash their hands to giving you a boost to access those hard-to-reach places in your cabin, this stool offers both convenience and safety, making it a valuable addition to your cruise essentials.
23. Reusable water bottle
As you get older, it’s more important than ever to stay hydrated.
This insulated water bottle is highly rated so I take it on all my cruises. Bottled water is expensive on cruise ships, so having your no-leak water bottle saves money while ensuring you always have access to fresh water.
Whether you’re lounging by the pool deck, attending activities, or heading to the gym, this durable bottle keeps your drinks cold for hours, making it a convenient and eco-friendly choice for your trip.
Speaking about drinks – I’ve written an entire post about what to consider before opting for a cruise drink package on MSC cruises, check it out next!
24. Lightweight collapsible walking stick
This practical accessory offers added support and stability, making navigating the ship easier and participating in onshore excursions.
Its lightweight design won’t weigh you down, and the collapsible feature allows you to tuck it away when not in use easily. Plus, the adjustable height ensures a perfect fit, catering to your comfort and needs.
Whether it’s exploring new destinations or simply moving around the ship, this walking stick provides peace of mind, helping to prevent falls and ensuring you stay active and confident throughout your journey.
25. Noise-canceling headphones
Bringing noise-canceling headphones on a cruise can be incredibly beneficial, offering a peaceful and comfortable experience amidst the lively atmosphere of the ship.
I wish I had invested in these years ago! Sometimes the loud music on the pool deck is too much when I want to relax.
These headphones help to block out the constant background noise of bustling crowds, engine sounds, and loud entertainment, allowing for moments of tranquility.
Whether relaxing on the deck, taking a nap in their cabin, or enjoying quiet time with a book, noise-canceling headphones create a personal oasis. They also enhance the clarity of audio for those with hearing difficulties, making it easier to enjoy music, audiobooks, or conversations without the distraction of surrounding noise.
26. Reusable hot/cold packs
Bringing hot/cold packs on a cruise can be especially beneficial for anyone who has occasional aches and pains.
Because you’re often on the go on cruises, these provide soothing relief for common aches and pains that may arise during your vacation. Hot packs can ease stiff joints and muscle soreness, which is particularly useful after a day of exploring or walking onshore. Cold packs, on the other hand, can reduce swelling and provide comfort for minor injuries or inflammation.
These packs are compact, easy to use, and offer a simple way to manage discomfort, helping to ensure that an elderly person can fully enjoy their cruise experience with added comfort and care.
27. Sleep eye mask
Bringing a sleep eye mask on a cruise can be highly beneficial as it offers a simple yet effective way to improve sleep quality.
The eye mask blocks out light, whether it’s from the early morning sun streaming into the cabin or artificial lights around the ship, creating a dark and calming environment conducive to rest. This can be especially helpful in adjusting to different time zones or taking daytime naps.
By reducing visual distractions, a sleep eye mask promotes deeper, uninterrupted sleep, helping elderly travelers feel more refreshed and energized to fully enjoy their cruise.
28. Portable neck fan
A portable neck fan can be a game-changer for a Baby Boomer on a cruise, providing instant relief from heat and enhancing comfort in warm weather.
This compact, hands-free fan can be worn around the neck, allowing for adjustable cooling that targets the face and upper body without the need for holding or manoeuvring a traditional fan.
It’s useful during outdoor excursions or while enjoying sunny deck areas, where temperatures rise quickly. By offering a personalized breeze, a portable neck fan helps to keep you cool and comfortable, making your cruise experience more pleasant.
Creative Things to Bring on a Cruise: Final Thoughts
Many people arrive at their cruises and regret they didn’t think of these kinds of creative items needed to make your cruise experience over the top.
My advice is to think about what you value the most out of your trip. If you’re really needing to unwind and unplug for a week, invest in items that will give you a sense of peace and serenity so you can recharge your body and mind.
If you’re in great shape emotionally and want to have the time of your life and “live it up,” buy some things that are going to bring more happiness to your trip. Take time to pack mindfully and you’ll ensure you have all you need to make it a memorable experience.
